PreCamp Blog07 - Day 5 - Cradle Mountain

10th January
Today was Cradle Mountain day for my camp company.  Last night we heard from yesterday's group who had a story to tell.  Just before they reached the summit, they met a bloke introducing himself as "Kevin from Queensland."  It was none other than the Prime Minister who was enjoying 10 days holidaying in Tasmania.  He had just climbed the mountain with his sons and a couple of other burly looking blokes!

We were woken up promptly this morning so we could be first to breakfast.  Those who wanted to tackle the summit left at 7:00am and we started walking from the Dove Lake carpark at 9:00am.  It was a sunny day so the views of the mountain over Dove Lake were just like the Tasmanian post cards I've seen.  The sunny day soon started to feel extra warm as we climbed Marion's Lookout.  From here we could see Dove Lake 300m below on one side, Crater Lake 200m below on the other and straight ahead was Cradle Mountain.

The next part of the walk was only slightly up and down as we crossed the Cradle Plateau to reach Kitchen Hut just before noon.  After a shortish lunch break, we started the climb proper.  From here the mountain looks enormous - much bigger than it looked from Dove Lake.  As it was such a fine day, there were heaps of other people climbing and the track ahead looked like a colourful ribbon of multi-coloured ants traipsing up and down to where the trail reached the blue sky above.

http://www.blognow.com.au/uploads/t/tastrekker/70919.jpgThe track started on loose gravel with knee high bushes.  It then went sideways for a while before heading upwards again on some boulders.  As the track got steeper, the boulders got bigger and bigger until we were climbing on rocks the size of cars in some places.  After a short downhill section and then a bit more climbing, we reached the top.  The views were amazing.  All around us, there were dozens, maybe even hundreds of mountains as far as the eye could see.  We praised God for the amazing view of his creation which was spread before us.

We got back down to Kitchen Hut by about 3:00pm and, after taking a different route down past Crater Lake, we reached the bus at 5:00.  Back at camp, we were just in time to join the tail end of the dinner queue at 7:00.

The worship session tonight was awesome but the teaching was even better.  It really got me thinking about God in a different way and it almost seemed as if it was written just for me.
