PreCamp Blog06 - Day 4 - Half Day Electives

Today, my camp company had our half day electives.  We had to pick 3 things from a list of options and we got to do 2 of them.  There were things like trout fishing, video production, a trip to the new Makers Workshop in Burnie and abseiling off the Mersey Bluff at Devonport.

My 2 activities were Tasmaziaand Gunns Plains Caves.  In the morning, my group jumped on a bus that headed up the hills behind camp to a town called Sheffield.  The small village is cute enough set against a backdrop of Mt Roland but the locals wanted something else to set them apart.  Their idea was to paint murals on almost every wall available.  We saw dozens of murals during a short drive through town.

Our real destination for this half day tour was Tasmazia, the worlds largest maze complex.  There were mazes of all sizes and some other funny attractions like the Village of Lower Crackpot.  The giant maze was almost impossible and the owner had to go on a rescue mission to fish some people out just as we were leaving.  Something we realised as we left is that Tassie can be seriously warm.  Just before lunch, it was nearly 30 degrees, the sun was fierce and there was not a cloud in the sky.

After having lunch back at camp, I joined another short bus tour, this time headed for Gunns Plains.  By now the temperature was up to 33 degrees so it was quite a shock to enter the caves where the temperature sits on a steady 9 degrees.  The decorations in the cave were amazing and they claim to have one of the largest shawl formations in the world!  As we headed out of the cave, it was like stepping into an oven as we headed back into the heat of the day.
After dinner tonight, we are having another worship/teaching session.  After that, I've been advised to get an early night.  Tomorrow morning, I'm on the early shift for breakky because I have ticked the option to climb Cradle Mountain.  We have to leaved early to make sure we're back in time for dinner.  I've heard it's quite hard but I think I'm up for it ... I hope!
